Keep Windows Secured to Lower Your A/C Costs

As temperatures rise, so can your energy bills—especially if your home isn’t sealed properly. One often overlooked factor? Windows that aren’t fully closed or locked.

Making sure your windows are secure does more than just keep your home safe—it helps your air conditioner work more efficiently and saves you money.

Here’s how:

1. Fully Closed Isn’t Always Fully Sealed

Many people think a window is "closed" if it’s pulled down, but unless it’s locked, it may not be sealed tightly.

Why it matters:
Unlocked windows can leave small gaps that allow hot air in and cool air out. Your A/C then has to work harder to maintain the set temperature—using more energy in the process.

Tip: After closing a window, always press down and lock it to ensure a proper seal.

2. Reduced Strain on Your A/C System

When outside heat leaks in through unsealed windows, your A/C has to run longer and more often to keep up.

Why it matters:
Over time, that added strain can shorten the lifespan of your system and increase the chance of breakdowns—especially during peak summer months.

3. Improved Indoor Comfort

Secured windows help maintain even temperatures throughout the home. You’ll notice:

  • Less hot air near windows
  • Fewer temperature swings
  • A more consistent, comfortable living space

4. Lower Energy Bills

Every bit of cooled air that escapes is money out the window—literally. By making sure your windows are closed and locked, you’re helping your A/C run efficiently and keeping your utility costs in check.

5. Don’t Forget About Sliding Windows or Screens

Sliding windows should sit firmly in the track and close completely. Make sure screens haven’t shifted or warped, creating gaps that allow airflow (or bugs) in.

Bonus Tip: If a window doesn’t seem to shut properly, let your property manager know. It could be a simple fix.

Quick Checklist:

Close and lock every window—even upper floors
Check for gaps, drafts, or warped frames
Inspect screens and sliding tracks for proper alignment
Report any windows that won’t close fully
